The Flooded Cavern

Hello everyone!

June has been an exceptionally productive month for Realms, with a focus on unit special abilities, new enemies, and their AI. A grand total of 30 new enemies have been added, and I now have all of the art assets to create 7 new tilesets for dungeons as well. The art assets were scheduled to arrive for July, which is when development was going to start on them.

However, progress has been so much faster than I anticipated that we're 9 days from the start of July and I already have all of the milestones for June completed. So, I opted to start on the new tilesets.

Something that I learned from early tilesets is that the isometric perspective doesn't lend itself all that well to perpendicular walls. If you look at popular top down games, the walls angle out to form more of a 'v' shape. That wasn't something I originally did with the dungeon tileset and it makes it feel very cramped and constrained.

Today I created the first new tileset, known as the Flooded Caverns. I used that idea to make them much more open and, well, cavernous. You can see that below:

The caverns are running at a solid 300fps too, with decent graphics settings.

The other thing that I have been working on relates to the flood of new enemies in the game; and that feature is Factions. When a World Event spawns, it is now associated with a faction. Factions so far are:

  • Bandits
  • Animals
  • Undead
  • Demons
  • Mythical
  • Goblin
  • Dragonkin

The faction is discovered on a successful scouting attempt, and will affect all types of monsters that spawn in the event.

Inside each faction, there are minions, lieutenants, and bosses. Minions are just a run-of-the-mill type of enemy, basic AI, simple attacks, and low-moderate damage (in most cases!). Lieutenants are smarter and will analyze the state of the area before deciding what to do. They are much stronger than minions, whether it be in pure damage output, or the ability to buff those around them. Bosses are the kind of thing that you want to take on 5v1 with a full party. They are engines of destruction and provide powerful buffs to those around them.
